Biking Fitness

Since moving to Seattle, I’ve discovered the bike trails here and have started biking home.  I try to do it twice a week.  My route is 22 miles and is on paved bike trail around Lake Washington.  It wasn’t until my 4th or 5th ride that I was motivated to track my progress.  I have now seen my first significant bump in my average speed and decrease in total ride time.  What’s most interesting to me is what sparked the jump.

Specifically, there was a point in my ride (around the 17/18 mile mark) where I would just hit a wall/burn out.  During that time my average speed would decrease from the 16/17 mph range to the 15/16 mph range.  I tried eating and hydrating better before my ride and couldn’t keep my speed up.

That changed on my ride on June 19th.  A couple of cyclists passed by me right around the time that I normally feel myself fading.  I was able to hold my speed and fill in behind them.  It was a challenging pace and one that I could keep up with.  I was able to keep my average up riding with them for the last 3 – 4 miles for an average of 16.7 mph.  Apparently just experiencing that pace allowed me to figure out how to do it on my own.  To my surprise, on my ride 1 week later I was able to pull myself at 17.4 mph.

Today is my first time riding since that bump up and I’m curious to see how I do.

N.Z. Couple Can’t Name Their Son ‘4real’

This is awesome!  What makes it so awesome is that back in March my family was visiting and we were sitting around the dinner table chatting and launching when my Dad revealed to us his latest "idea" (of which he has many – much longer story).  His idea was a book of baby names that all contained numbers.  We proceeded to convert all our names and family names into names that included numbers:

Name Translation Pronunciation
David DAV1D dav-one-dee
Becky 3ECKY three-kee
Carey CARE4 care-four
Mary MAR4 mar-four
Rob RO3 row-three

We made them for the rest of our family (cousins, aunts and uncles) and then vowed to only call each other and other members of our family by our "number names".  It didn’t really stick as well as we thought and mostly we thought my dad was nuts! 🙂

Turns out that, as always, Dad was right.  Classic! – N.Z. Couple Can’t Name Their Son ‘4real’ – Celebrity Gossip | Entertainment News | Arts And Entertainment

Bono hits Vanity Fair

BARACK OBAMAI love reading magazines.  And it’s something that I try to do sparingly.  I actually can’t remember the last time I bought a magazine for myself.  However, recently I was compelled to buy the latest issue of Vanity Fair.

It turns out, Bono joined this issue as co-editor of the magazine for a special issue on Africa – and its amazing!  I highly encourage everyone to pick up a copy (good luck trying to pick a cover) to make tangible the experience that was intended by this issue.  At the very least buy the issue to see the haplogroups mapped out on on the magazine masthead.  Also check out the complementary coverage on the Vanity Fair website and make sure to spend time with the interactive map of Africa.

The magazine features 20 different covers photographed by Annie Leibovitz portraying high-visibility individuals that all have some connection to Africa.  In the images one person is telling something to the other person, who then tells something to the next person.  It’s a game of telephone over being played over the various cover photos.

The game of telephone is a call to action, not only in Africa, but in our homes.  It’s time for us to step up and demonstrate to the world that America believes in the freedom and democracy that it represents to everyone.  What will you do?
